Is refurbished home medical equipment a safe choice?
What refurbished should mean
A properly refurbished device has been inspected, cleaned, repaired as needed, and tested against the maker specification. The word is not regulated the same way everywhere, so the key is what the supplier actually did, not the label on the listing.
Items where refurbished is common
Frames, wheelchairs, lift chairs, and some mobility bases are frequently sold refurbished because the structure is durable. Items that contact the body or hold a charge, such as mattresses, cushions and batteries, deserve closer questions because wear is harder to see.
Questions to ask before buying
Ask what was replaced, whether the device was sanitized, what warranty applies to a refurbished unit, and whether parts are still available. Keep the receipt and any inspection record. If the answers are vague, treat that as a reason to look elsewhere.
